Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Make Big Donation to Somali Relief

Angelina Jolie knows how to put her money where her mouth is -- she and Brad Pitt have donated $340,000 to a Somali relief organization she honored recently on behalf of the United Nations.

As a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Jolie made a surprise visit to Switzerland earlier in the month to present a humanitarian award to the Yemen-based aid group. The organization, Humanitarian Initiative Just Relief Aid, is credited with helping thousands of refugees from famine-torn Somalia who arrive in Yemen each year.

When bestowing the award on the group's founder, Jolie, 36, tearfully acknowledged the impact refugees, particularly mothers caring for children under indescribable circumstances, have had on her life.

"Most of all I'm so grateful—I don't want to cry—to the refugee families that I have the honor and privilege to spend the last years with," she said at the time, "From them I've learned so much. I've learned to be a better person, a better mother. They've inspired me by showing me the unbreakable strength of the human spirit."

The Jolie-Pitt Foundation's generous donation will go toward expanding the Badbaado health services clinic, which helps 300 Somali refugees every day, the organization's spokesman has announced.
